VineRoutes announces its list of Ontario’s Top 20 Wineries of 2022

Each year, the VineRoutes editorial team tastes hundreds of Ontario-made wines through both pre-arranged and casual drop-in visits, and from these tastings and visits, the editors select the Top 20 Wineries of the year via a preferential ballot. From Niagara – the centre of Ontario’s wine production – to Prince Edward County and Essex County, this list calls out remarkable portfolios of wines in addition to exceptional service, quality-to-price-ratio (QPR), and other experiential attributes.

“When we launched this list for the first time in 2020, we had no idea how popular and well-received it would be,” says Carmelo Giardina, Brand Principal for VineRoutes. “Our growing team of contributors have worked hard to evaluate and deliver a list that truly represents Ontario’s wine community.”

With so much change having happened within our communities within such a short period of time, including the way the consumer experience has taken shape and how wineries have had to quickly adjust, it’s important to note that Ontario’s wine industry, by and large, is keeping pace with the rising expectations that now come with a customer-focused experience.

“I think the biggest takeaway from our winery visit experiences over these last few years has been just how responsive the industry has been, and how winery staff have used this period as an opportunity to create unique customer experiences that go above and beyond enjoying a wine flight,” says Giardina.

All three of Ontario’s official VQA designated wine regions are recognized for a second year running, and Emerging Region Norfolk County has been recognized for a third consecutive year courtesy of the area’s flagship winery, Burning Kiln.

For more details, images, and interview requests, please contact Managing Editor, Paula Henriques, at paula@vineroutes.com. A complete list of the Top 20 Wineries of 2022 appears with this release as well as in an official story, now published on vineroutes.com.

Join us in congratulating these highly acclaimed wineries!

Barenaked Ladies rescheduled to September 14, 2023 | 8 PM

Due to inclement weather on the Lake Erie shoreline, we are rescheduling the Barenaked Ladies Concert in the Vineyard to September 14, 2023 at 8 PM. The storm did significant damage to our concert infrastructure and added a huge amount of snow to the vineyard parking lot field, which is melting rapidly and has created a muddy mess that makes parking impossible. In no way will this be the type of concert experience you expect when you come to the winery. If you are unable to attend the rescheduled concert date and you've purchased tickets for the original date, please call the winery at 519-586-9858 for more information. Tickets purchased for the November 26, 2022 show will be honoured at the September 14, 2023 show. To purchase tickets, please click here

Burning Kiln Winery is excited to welcome world-renowned, multi platinum-selling Canadian band Blue Rodeo to the vineyard stage

Burning Kiln Winery is excited to welcome world-renowned, multi platinum-selling Canadian bands, Barenaked Ladies & Blue Rodeo, to the vineyard stage as our final concerts for the 2022 season. Blue Rodeo will perform on Sunday, November 6th at 3 PM with Barenaked Ladies closing out our concert season on Saturday, November 26th at 2 PM. They will both perform in the crisp, fall air overlooking the lush natural landscape of Burning Kiln Winery, located at 1709 Front Road in St. Williams, ON.

"We are very pleased to end our 2022 Concerts in the Vineyard series with such iconic Canadian bands", said Karen Matthews, General Manager at Burning Kiln Winery. "We're thrilled to have them highlight their greatest hits on our vineyard stage, with both groups having a music catalogue spanning over 30 years. Concert attendees will be thoroughly entertained and will enjoy nostalgic hits mixed with stirring new music from their latest albums." Matthews also feels both days will have unique festival vibes. "We'll have food trucks, fire pits and the winery will be open for wine and merchandise for everyone's holiday shopping needs."

Claire Senko, Artistic Producer and Curator of the concert series, feels both Barenaked Ladies & Blue Rodeo have created a soundtrack for so many people's lives. "Whether you sang out loud to their early songs or or put their eclectic libraries on shuffle for a road trip, there's no doubt their music has a special place in the heart of so many people across the globe."

The Blue Rodeo concert will take place in the afternoon on Sunday, November 6th at 3 PM with tickets for the general public on sale Saturday, September 24th at 10 AM.

Blue Rodeo Bio

The definition of a rebel is someone who goes against the grain. For close to thirty years now, Blue Rodeo has taken the road less travelled – and succeeded far beyond anyone’s expectations. The band emerged in the early 80’s as a countrified rock band in the era of hair metal and glossy pop. Despite sticking out like a sore thumb (or maybe because of it), their single “Try” became omni-present on radio across Canada and set in motion a three decade long career of headlining every club, theatre and arena in Canada. In 1993, when grunge rock was squeezing commercial rock off the radio, they recorded their most acoustic album, Five Days In July, and scored their biggest hit selling over a half million copies of that one record alone.

In the 35 years since forming, Blue Rodeo have sold over 4 million albums, received dozens of JUNO Award nominations and wins, played over 2,000 shows, been inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, received a star on Canada’s Walk of Fame, been named to the Order of Canada and have been honoured with the Governor General’s Performing Arts Award.

Community support for this concert has been generously provided by the Government of Ontario, MyFM, and the Simcoe Reformer.

Barenaked Ladies Bio

Over the course of their remarkable career, Barenaked Ladies have sold over 15 million albums, written multiple top 20 hits (including radio staples “One Week,” “Pinch Me,” “If I Had $1,000,000”), garnered 2 GRAMMY nominations, won 8 JUNO Awards, had Ben & Jerry’s name an ice cream after them (“If I Had 1,000,000 Flavours”), participated in the first-ever “space-to-earth musical collaboration” with astronaut Chris Hadfield, and garnered an international fan base whose members number in the millions. In 2018, the band were inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame and Toronto Mayor John Tory declared October 1st “Barenaked Ladies Day.”

Known for their tremendous hits and incredible live shows, the band has continued to grow their international following for over 30 years. Detour de Force, Barenaked Ladies' 16th studio album, is led by the buoyant and sonically adventurous first single “Flip,” which reflects the many flips and changes of the last few years, is a song that Ed Robertson says, "is about being open to other perspectives. We try to write songs that move us, that are big. I think this is a song that’s going to be a real energy moment in the live show.”

Burning Kiln Winery welcomes four time Juno Award winners The Sheepdogs to the vineyard stage

Burning Kiln Winery is pleased to welcome back four-time Juno Award winners, The Sheepdogs, on Thursday, September 1st at 7 PM, as a rocking addition to the Concerts in the Vineyard series. They will perform in the open air, on a stage overlooking the lush natural landscape of Burning Kiln Winery, located at 1709 Front Road in St. Williams, ON.

"We are very thrilled to welcome back The Sheepdogs to the winery for a concert that highlights their latest album, Outta Sight. "It feels like a homecoming after having them here last year for a highly successful musical evening," said Karen Matthews, General Manager at Burning" Kiln Winery. "Their new material is both nostalgic and novel and and we are ready for it."

Claire Senko, Artistic Producer and Curator of the concert series, appreciates The Sheepdogs admiration for rock history and their forward facing musical talents. "As with all the band’s material, it’s reverent of rock history, yet their music and vocals continue to sound richly honest and never imitative as you levitate with the band as the music “soothes your soul."

The concert will take place on the evening of Thursday, September 1st at 7 pm, with tickets going on sale Friday, August 5th at 10am EST. The Sheepdogs will take the stage at 7 PM with an as-yet unannounced opening act warming up the crowd at 6 PM.

Hailing from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, the Sheepdogs are a hardworking, hard-living, straight up rock ‘n’ roll band who return with their latest studio album, Outta Sight, the grooviest, simplest, most penetrating album of their career. Recorded during the pandemic the band—Ewan Currie, Ryan Gullen, Sam Corbett, Jimmy Bowskill and Shamus Currie—were, like the rest of us, confused, cast ashore, and feeling isolated during COVID. Their response was to do what came most naturally to them: making stripped-down rock ‘n’ roll.

The strength of the Sheepdogs in full throttle straight-up appeals to your senses. Without pretension, it’s urgent, rhythmic, clear, fun; it’s a break from slick production and gazing at your navel and proclaims the joy, jubilation, of drums, bass, horns, and electric guitar. The Sheepdogs make tunes that make you nod your head. The artistry, however, beneath the stadium riffs—the harmonies, the multiple guitar parts, the groove behind a rhythm section that hangs out together when they’re not on the clock—is battle-honed and spit-shined between vans, garages, thousands of soundchecks and, yes, headlining shows.

“Rock ‘n’ Roll is about cheering us up. Simple as that,” says Currie. “We hope our music does the same for the listeners at a time where things still can feel very tough. There’s no greater truth than rock ‘n’ roll.”

Ticket info:

The first 500 tickets are being offered at $65.00 + taxes with the remaining amount priced at $79.00 + taxes. Tickets go on sale Friday, August 5th, 2022 at 10 AM EST at www.burningkilnwinery.ca.

Burning Kiln Winery welcomes award-winning Canadian music icon Bruce Cockburn w/ special guest Annabelle Chvostek to the vineyard stage.

With great pleasure, Burning Kiln Winery announces the presentation of award-winning, internationally-renowned artist & activist Bruce Cockburn, on Sunday, August 21 at 4pm, as a welcome addition to the Concerts in the Vineyard series. Cockburn's illustrious career has been shaped by politics, spirituality, and musical diversity. He will perform in the open air, on a stage overlooking the lush natural landscape of Burning Kiln Winery, located at 1709 Front Road in St. Williams, ON.

"We are very excited to welcome Bruce Cockburn to our winery for a concert that celebrates over 50 years of exceptional music and the human spirit," said Karen Matthews, General Manager at Burning Kiln. "His songs of romance, protest, and spiritual discovery are among the best to have emerged from Canada over the last 50 years and his guitar playing, both acoustic and electric, has placed him in the company of the world’s top instrumentalists."

Claire Senko, Artistic Producer and Curator of the concert series, notes that he has always expressed a tough yet hopeful stance: to kick at the darkness till it bleeds daylight. "His musical journey has seen him embrace folk, jazz, rock, and worldbeat styles while travelling to such far-flung places as Guatemala, Mali, Mozambique, and Nepal, and writing memorable songs about his ever-expanding world of wonders."

The concert will take place in the afternoon of Sunday, August 21 at 4 pm, with tickets going on sale Friday, July 15 at 10am EST. Canadian artist & Cockburn collaborator Annabelle Chvostek will take the stage at 4 pm with Bruce Cockburn following. Doors open at 2 pm.

“My job,” Cockburn explains, “is to try and trap the spirit of things in the scratches of pen on paper and the pulling of notes out of metal.”

That scratching and pulling has earned Bruce Cockburn high praise as an exceptional songwriter and a revered guitarist. And he remains deeply respected for his activism on issues from native rights and land mines to the environment and Third World debt, working for organizations such as Oxfam, Amnesty International, Doctors Without Borders, and Friends of the Earth.

Throughout his career, Cockburn has deftly captured the joy, pain, fear, and faith of human experience in song. Whether singing about retreating to the country or going up against chaos, tackling imperialist lies or embracing ecclesiastical truths, Cockburn sees it like this; “We can’t settle for things as they are,” he once warned. “If you don’t tackle the problems, they’re going to get worse.”

For his many achievements, the Ottawa-born artist has been honoured with 13 Juno Awards, an induction into both the Canadian Music Hall of Fame and the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame, as well as the Governor General’s Performing Arts Award, and has been made an Officer of the Order of Canada. But he never rests on his laurels. “I’d rather think about what I’m going to do next,” says Cockburn. “My models for graceful aging are guys like John Lee Hooker and Mississippi John Hurt, who never stop working till they drop, as I fully expect to be doing, and just getting better as musicians and as human beings.”

His commitment to growth has made Bruce Cockburn both an exemplary citizen and a legendary artist whose prized songbook will be celebrated for many years to come.
